Housing is one of the biggest challenges in India, especially in urban areas where the demand for homes continues to rise with growing populations. To tackle this issue, the Government of India launched the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) – Urban, a mission aimed at providing affordable housing to urban poor and middle-income families.   1. Economically Weaker Section (EWS): Families with an annual income of up to ₹3,00,000. Eligible homes for this group are typically smaller, up to 30 square meters.
  2. Low-Income Group (LIG): Families with an annual income between ₹3,00,001 and ₹6,00,000. These families can avail homes up to 60 square meters.
  3. Middle-Income Group-1 (MIG-1): Families with an annual income between ₹6,00,001 and ₹12,00,000. Homes for this group can be up to 160 square meters.
  4. Middle-Income Group-2 (MIG-2): Families with an income between ₹12,00,001 and ₹18,00,000. These families are eligible for homes up to 200 square meters.

To apply for PMAY – Urban, the family should meet the following criteria:

  • The family must include at least a husband, wife, and unmarried children.
  • The town or city they live in must be covered under the PMAY scheme.
  • They must not have benefited from any previous government housing schemes.

  1. Slum Rehabilitation: PMAY aims to improve the living conditions of slum dwellers by offering them better housing through private developers. These developers use land as a resource to build affordable homes, which not only provide better shelter but also improve the overall environment of the area.
  2. Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS): One of the highlights of PMAY is the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme. This allows families to get interest subsidies on loans they take to buy or construct homes.   3. Affordable Housing Projects: The scheme also promotes affordable housing in partnership with both public and private sectors.   • Aadhaar Number (or Aadhaar Enrolment ID) for identity verification.

  • Identity and Address Proof: Documents such as PAN card, voter ID, or driving license.
  • Community Certificate: If the applicant belongs to a minority community, they need to provide proof.
  • EWS/LIG/MIG Certificate: This certificate proves the applicant’s income category.
  • Bank Details: Proof of bank account and transactions.
  • Non-Ownership of a Pucca House: A declaration that the applicant does not own a pucca house anywhere in India.
