In a world where motorsports remain a male-dominated arena, 16-year-old Shriya Lohia is rewriting the rules and setting new benchmarks. From cruising at 110 kmph in go-karts at just nine years old to speeding past 210 kmph in the Indian F4 Championship, Shriya’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary.

A Passion Ignited by Chance

Shriya’s love for racing wasn’t born out of a lifelong ambition but rather a family trip to Panchgani, Maharashtra. What started as a fun activity at a rental karting track soon transformed into an undeniable passion. By the time the trip ended, Shriya had a clear declaration for her parents: “I want to be a racing driver.”

Despite her early exposure to multiple sports like tennis, basketball, swimming, and badminton, it was motorsport that truly captivated her. Her parents, Ritesh and Vandana Lohia, recognized her dedication and made it their mission to support her dream.

The Road to Indian F4 Championship

At the age of nine, Shriya began her professional karting journey in Bengaluru, training tirelessly despite the physically exhausting travel between Pune and Bangalore. Her talent was undeniable, and in 2018, she made her debut in the Rotax Max India Karting Championship, finishing fourth in the Micro Max category.

From there, she climbed the ranks rapidly, earning the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India’s (FMSCI) Outstanding Women in Motorsports award for four consecutive years. In 2023, she became the youngest female racer to score points in the inaugural Indian F4 Championship while representing Hyderabad Blackbirds.

Overcoming Financial Hurdles

Motorsports is an expensive pursuit, with each championship costing between Rs 5-7 lakh. From training sessions to racing gear, the financial burden was immense. Shriya’s family adjusted their lifestyle to support her dream, but self-funding soon became unsustainable.

Her breakthrough came when she secured her first sponsorship, a crucial milestone that eased the financial strain on her family. “Without sponsorships, it is almost impossible to self-fund yourself,” she acknowledges.

Defying Stereotypes in Motorsport

Being a female racer comes with its own unique challenges, and Shriya Lohia has experienced them firsthand. On the track, she has often faced aggressive behavior from male competitors who struggle to accept being overtaken by a female driver. But instead of letting it affect her, she stays focused.

“I don’t see myself as just a female racer—I see myself as a racer, period. My goal is to be the best on the track, regardless of gender,” she says with determination.

Shriya firmly believes that the more women step into motorsports, the more their presence will become the norm. “Every race we compete in is a step forward for the future generation of female racers,” she adds.

Juggling Racing and Academics

Despite her intense racing commitments, Shriya remains dedicated to her education. To balance both passions, her parents decided to homeschool her, ensuring she doesn’t fall behind in academics.

“I give equal importance to both racing and studies because I know they’re both crucial for my future,” she explains. While she sometimes misses the traditional school experience, she acknowledges that her journey is special and unlike most.

Chasing the Formula 1 Dream

Shriya’s achievements in motorsports are already impressive. In 2022, she was honored with the prestigious Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, a milestone she considers significant not just for herself, but for Indian motorsport as a whole.

Her ultimate dream? To race in Formula 1 and proudly represent India on the world stage. “Motorsport is one of the toughest fields out there, but I’m willing to give it everything I’ve got,” she declares.

With every race she competes in, Shriya is not just chasing personal success—she’s inspiring young racers to break stereotypes and challenge limits. Her advice to aspiring drivers?

“Keep your eyes on your goals and tune out the skeptics. Your passion and perseverance will always outshine any negativity.”

As she continues her journey toward greatness, the world watches in anticipation, waiting for the day she makes history in Formula 1.
