A Hollywood Romance Cut Short
Martha Stewart, the queen of domestic perfection, recently shared an unexpected reason for breaking up with acclaimed actor Sir Anthony Hopkins. It turns out that his chilling portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs was just too much for her to handle.
The Big Reveal on The Ellen DeGeneres Show
During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Stewart played a round of “Two Truths and a Lie.” Among her statements was the revelation that she had dated the two-time Academy Award winner but ended things because she couldn’t separate him from his infamous role as the sophisticated yet terrifying cannibal, Hannibal Lecter.

DeGeneres initially guessed that Stewart’s claim about dating Hopkins was a lie. However, Stewart quickly corrected her, confirming that the relationship did, in fact, happen—and it was Lecter’s chilling presence that led her to call it quits.
“I have a big, scary house in Maine that’s way by itself on a hundred acres in a forest,” Stewart explained. “I couldn’t even imagine taking Anthony Hopkins there. I couldn’t because all I could think of was him eating, you know…” Stewart trailed off, leaving the audience in fits of laughter as they pieced together her reference to Lecter’s gruesome appetite.
Haunted by The Silence of the Lambs
While she didn’t specify exactly when they dated, it’s clear that her impression of Hopkins’ iconic role left a lasting mark. Hopkins, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of the cannibalistic serial killer in the 1991 psychological thriller, has reprised the role in subsequent films, including Hannibal (2001) and Red Dragon (2002).

This isn’t the first time Stewart has opened up about her brief romance with Hopkins. In a past appearance on The Meredith Vieira Show, she mentioned going out to dinner with him a few times but admitted that she struggled to shake the disturbing imagery from The Silence of the Lambs—particularly the infamous brain-eating scene.
Where Are They Now?
Despite her inability to separate fiction from reality in this case, Stewart remains a fan of Hopkins’ work. The esteemed actor, who won his second Best Actor Oscar in 2021 for his role in The Father, has had an illustrious career spanning decades. As for his personal life, Hopkins has been married to Stella Arroyave since 2003, marking his third marriage.

Stewart, on the other hand, has remained single since her divorce from Andrew Stewart in 1990. While she’s had her share of high-profile relationships, it seems that none have been quite as memorable—or as unnerving—as her brief romance with Sir Anthony Hopkins.
