Elon Musk has once again set his sights on the stars, revealing that SpaceX is preparing to launch a groundbreaking rocket that could forever change the future of humanity.
During an interview with Fox News, the billionaire entrepreneur announced that the new rocket, named Starship, is set to launch this year. According to Musk, this isn’t just another spacecraft—it’s a revolutionary technology that has the potential to turn humans into a multi-planetary species for the first time in history.
NASA Astronauts Return—And Musk Teases the Future
Musk’s announcement came shortly after the safe return of NASA astronauts Sunita “Suni” Williams and Barry “Butch” Wilmore, who had been stranded in space for nine months due to technical failures with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft.
Originally, their mission was supposed to last only eight days, but after multiple safety concerns with their vehicle, NASA had no choice but to delay their return. The astronauts remained on the International Space Station (ISS) until SpaceX’s Dragon capsule finally brought them back to Earth on March 18, landing just off the coast of Florida.
Following their successful return, Musk congratulated the SpaceX and NASA teams for their efforts in ensuring a safe landing. But he didn’t stop there—he took the opportunity to share a bold vision for the future of space travel.

SpaceX’s official website describes Starship as the most powerful launch system ever built. It has the capability to carry up to 100 people on long-duration interplanetary missions, making it the first spaceship designed for deep-space colonization.
Beyond Mars missions, Starship is also expected to play a key role in:

Why Does Musk Want to Colonize Mars?
Musk has long been vocal about his ambitions to colonize Mars, believing it is the best option for humanity’s survival in the long term.
Mars is one of Earth’s closest planetary neighbors, and Starship is expected to reach the Red Planet in just six months. SpaceX also hopes to develop a system where the rocket can refuel on Mars, making return trips to Earth possible.
According to SpaceX, Mars has several characteristics that make it a viable second home for humans:
- Sufficient sunlight – Though Mars is farther from the Sun than Earth, it still gets enough light for solar power.
- Cold, but adaptable – While Mars is colder than Earth, Musk believes we could artificially warm the planet over time.
- CO₂-rich atmosphere – Mars’ atmosphere is mostly carbon dioxide, meaning plants could potentially grow there if the air is compressed.
- Lower gravity – Mars’ gravity is about 38% of Earth’s, allowing people to lift heavier objects and move more easily.
- A familiar day length – A Martian day is almost the same length as a day on Earth, making human adaptation easier.
