16 Years in the Making: Kashmir Mathematician Unveils India’s First Solar-Powered Car

Srinagar-based mathematician and engineer, Bilal Ahmed Mir, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by developing India’s first high-tech solar-powered car, named ‘Ray’. Created under his company, Bilal’s Innovative Solar Automobile (BISA), this eco-friendly vehicle marks a significant leap toward sustainable mobility in India.

A Vision Turned Reality

Bilal Ahmed Mir has been working tirelessly for the past 16 years to bring this project to life. The inspiration behind ‘Ray’ stemmed from an article he read about the future fuel crisis and the rising costs of fossil fuels. Determined to find a sustainable solution, he initially experimented with hydrogen-fueled cars but shifted to solar energy due to safety and technological challenges.

His dedication and persistence paid off when he unveiled ‘Ray’ on March 18, 2024. The car is set to hit the roads officially on June 22, 2025, and will be priced below ₹10 lakh, making it an affordable option for the general public.

Key Features of ‘Ray’

Unlike conventional electric vehicles (EVs) that require external charging, Ray is self-sustaining, relying solely on solar power. Some of its standout features include:

  • 1 kW Solar Power Output – The vehicle generates energy efficiently using high-tech solar panels.
  • Automated Solar-Powered Gull-Wing Doors – The car boasts stylish, futuristic doors powered by solar energy.
  • Music-Responsive Rear Lighting – A unique lighting system that reacts to music beats.
  • Autonomous Parking Sensors – Ensuring safety and convenience while parking.
  • Smart Solar Panels with Auto-Orientation – The panels adjust their position to maximize sunlight absorption, enhancing efficiency.
  • Convertible Seating – The two-seater model can be converted into a five-seater, making it practical for different needs.

Competing on a Global Level

Mir is confident about Ray’s superiority over other solar-powered vehicles in India. He pointed out that Vayve EVA, showcased at Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, generates only 100 watts of power, whereas Ray produces 1 kW.

He boldly claims that his competition isn’t within India but on a global scale, citing Dutch-based Lightyear and US-based Aptera Motors as the only major contenders in the solar car industry. “Much like a sunbeam stretches endlessly, so too does my car’s journey. Ray can run continuously without needing external charging,” he stated.

Rigorous Testing and Upcoming Roadshows

Bilal Ahmed Mir has rigorously tested Ray in the challenging weather conditions of Kashmir, ensuring that it functions efficiently even in overcast and snowy conditions. To promote his innovation, starting March 31, 2025, he plans to conduct roadshows in:

  • Gulmarg
  • Pahalgam
  • Boulevard Road, Srinagar

These roadshows will not only showcase the car’s capabilities but also raise awareness about the importance of clean-energy vehicles.

Investment and Recognition

Bilal invested over ₹22 lakh in the project, even selling a portion of his ancestral property to fund it. His work has gained global recognition, with research publications in six different countries. In 2022, the initial version of Ray went viral, catching the attention of Mahindra and other leading automakers. While details remain confidential, Mir hints at potential collaborations in the future.

Patents and Future Prospects

To protect his innovation, Bilal has patented Ray’s design, safety features, and overall technology. His company, BISA, is registered and poised to launch Ray in the market soon. If successful, this venture could pave the way for India’s solar automobile revolution.
